Abstract:To understand the situation of salmonella contamination in food products in Fujian, its distribution features and antibiotics susceptibility of the isolates and to provide needed information to policy makers to work out relevant regulations and construct food product safety alarming system,4 sentinel surveillance spots (Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Longyan, and Youxi) have been chosen according to their geographic locations and their economic background. They are responsible for randomly collecting food products from markets in winter and summer seasons from 2000 through 2002.Then the collected samples would be processed and inoculated in salmonella agar plates. After that, the isolates would go through biochemistry testing, serotyping and antibiotics susceptibility tests. Altogether, there were 978 samples collected and tested. The positive rate for salmonella was 6.44%.The salmonella isolates were distributed in 5 groups with 13 serotypes. Among them, 29.69% is antibiotic resistant. The study showed that there were salmonella contamination existing in raw or frozen poultry meat, sea food and eggs in surveillance spots. And it is necessary to further strengthen public hygiene supervision and monitoring in the process of slaughtering, transportation and processing, and implement the standard of proper use of antibiotics in husbandry setting to minimize the occurrence of food born diseases.
