Abstract:The aminoglycosides are composed of a large and diverse class of antibiotics that characteristically contain two or more aminosugars linked by glycosidic bonds to an aminocycliol component. The aminoglycosides have been added for many years into feeds of domestic animals for prevention and treatment of infection as well as for growth promotion. Many qualitative analytic methods for aminoglycosides have been reported. This article comprises a comprehensive review of quantitative analytic methods for the determination of aminoglycosides including Radioimmunoassasy(RIA), pre-and post-column derivatization HPLC, non-derivatization HPLC(PED,ELSD) and HPLC-MS. RIA is a useful semi-quantitative screening test for the aminoglycosides in complex matrices. HPLC techniques provide the specificity and sensitivity for studies, while HPLC-MS is widely employed for the confirmation of veterinary drug residues.
