From September 1, 2008 to February 17, 2009, Salmonella typhimurium caused at least 642 cases of salmonellosis food poisoning in 44 states throughtout the United States. Infection may have contributed to nine deaths. Epidemiologic and laboratory findings indicated that peanut butter produced at one plant was the source of the outbreak.
