Abstract:To ensure food safety, a new mode of food supervision was implemented in the 15 towns under the jurisdiction of this district from early 2004. The government of each town and its top official and a commission for food safety composed of the relevant department of the district government were charged with the responsibility of food safety supervision. Preliminary results indicated that the new mode of supervision effectively reduced the pesticide residue in the vegetables grown in this district. Difficulties met in the process of implementation were discussed.=
