Abstract: Objective To study the status of food safety related specific trade concerns of China under WTO/SPS committee meetings and provide recommendations for the improvement mechanism. Methods Statistically analyze the data of specific trade concerns related to Chinese food safety based on thedocuments G/SPS/GEN/204/Rev.11, Rev.11A1, Rev.11A2, and Rev.11A3 notified by WTO/SPS Committee Secretariat using Excel software. Results During 2002 and 2010, a total of 17 specific trade concerns related to China were raised on SPS regular meetings, among which 11 concerns were raised by China toward other members and 6 concerns were raised by other members toward China. Additionally, China participated in five other specific trade concerns as a support member. The related members were mainly concentrated in the European Union, Japan, the United States and other developed economies. Pesticide residue limits were the main technical barriers for China''s food exports. Microorganism limits in foodstuff, wine products standards and all other food safety issues have become the subject of concern toward China. Conclusion China should establish and improve WTO/SPS notifications consultative mechanisms to effectively respond to specific trade concerns, and strengthen the communication with the Codex in China in order to improve the ability of China''s response and submission of the specific trade concerns on WTO/SPS regular meetings.
