Abstract:
Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK) has attracted wide attention for its application prospects in the food and pharmaceutical fields as a highly promising “next-generation probiotic”. A safety assessment is therefore essential for its compliant application. This review systematically examined the differences in regulatory policies and management pathways for AKK across major global economies, with a focus on its safety assessment concerning antimicrobial resistance, virulence, and human safety. The potential safety concerns of AKK associated with colorectal tumors and other diseases in specific physiological and pathological scenarios were discussed. The key issues existing in current safety assessment of AKK were summarized. This review provides directions for future research and suggestions for regulatory optimization, and references for the scientific assessment and compliant application of AKK.
